Our celebrities are those that entertain and inspire us such as those that act in the movies, on television and the stage, our favorite musicians, athletes from our favorite teams or provide national pride representing at the Olympics, the authors of our favorite literary works and those that provide contributions in the world of art. Each month in this population-we™ (pop-we) series, I Heart Celebrity Causes, a celebrity will be chosen and the cause that they promote will be looked at.
I Heart Celebrity Causes!

This month in the ninth installment of I Heart Celebrity Causes the focus is on Maria Menounos and Take Action Hollywood!  Menounos has been in the public eye for years as correspondent and host on Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Extra and E! News. She has also written a series of books to help empower people to a healthy lifestyle. For a few years she also made the jump from lifelong fan to participant as she wrestled in the WWE.

Menounos founded Take Action Hollywood! in 2002 after a trip to South Africa where she witnessed the devastation of AIDS on the people there. The mission is to raise awareness about social issues by utilizing the entertainment industry. Menounos and co-founder Keven Undergaro self initiated many of the programs they are involved in. Among the issues they are helping promote are HIV\AIDS healthcare, diabetes, autism, public school diversity, pet neutering and childhood obesity. Currently Menounos is the ambassador for the Entertainment Industry Foundation's Diabetes Aware campaign.

Take Action One Cup was launched in 2007 to call upon students around the country to identify problems in their communities and come up with creative and impactful solutions. It is an annual competition designed to empower both students and their communities. Teams made of students from middle and high schools around the country compete by identifying a problem and exhibiting a solution that has the greatest amount of creativity, dedication and impact. They are judged by both their peers through online voting and campaigning and by a panel of academics, pro-social activists and celebrities. The first Cup was done with Cosmogirl magazine but now its done with Channel One News.

One charity event Menounos finds most gratifying is the Annual Day of Beauty at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Menounos along with a team of make-up artists and hair designers along with other celebrities go to the Teen Lounge to give makeovers to participating patients and their families.  Ranked as one of the top five children's hospitals in the nation it treats the gambit of health issues including the rarest and most complex in pediatrics. Many of the participating patients are terminally ill. All also receive amazing gift bags containing a wide assortment of products and Menounos often leaves the lounge to take bags to patients in rooms who couldn't make it down. The 8th Annual Day of Beauty took place on November 7, 2014.

Information on how to give to this charity can be found on the Take Action Hollywood! donation page.

I Heart Celebrity Causes Highlights Steve King's Heifer International

As a society we like our celebrities and tend to support the causes they endorse with this status.

This February is the eighth installment of I Heart Celebrity Causes the focus is on author Stephen King and Heifer International. King is best known for his work in the horror genre but he has also written fantasy, science fiction and suspense. He has 54 novels to his credit including seven he wrote under the pen name Richard Bachman. Starting with his first book "Carrie" more than 350 million copies have been sold. Many have also been adapted into movies and the author admits his favorite three are "Stand by Me," "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Mist." "The Running Man," was one of his Richard Bachman books, which made it to the big screen.

Heifer International is one of the primary charities that King has lent his celebrity to. Founded nearly 70 years ago by American farmer and aid worker Dan West, the main goal of the organization is to end world hunger and poverty. Working to help refugees of the Spanish Civil War; West quickly realized more help could be provided by giving an actual cow rather than just a ration of milk.

Now Heifer International empowers families and helps communities by providing animals which provide both food and income. Areas that had a long history of poverty are able to sustain agriculture and commerce as products like: milk, eggs, honey and wool can be traded or sold. That income gives the communities the financial base to fund small businesses and build schools.

Animals provide the foundation and those that receive animals agree to pass along the offspring to others in need. On average nine generations of animals can be found; while in some areas 22 generations of animals provided by Heifer International can be traced. This cycle of positive change is paid forward through out the community.

Every Heifer project starts by laying 12 cornerstones or solid principles that lay the framework for change and sustainable development. Those 12 are:

  • Passing on the Gift,
  • Accountability,
  • Sharing and Giving,
  • Sustainability and Self-Reliance,
  • Improved Animal Management,
  • Nutrition and Income,
  • Gender and Family Focus,
  • Genuine Need and Justice,
  • Improving the Environment,
  • Full Participation,
  • Training and Education, and
  • Spirituality.

This helps provide lasting change as more than 22.6 million families in over 30 countries word-wide have been lifted out of hunger and poverty.

The organization has a gift catalog which gives people the option to purchase a share of animal or to donate the full price of a goat, heifer, sheep, water buffalo or other. There are also other options to donate toward assistance to promote women's empowerment, support sustainable farming and provide basic needs. If interested, the gift catalog can be found online at Heifer International.

Most importantly, Bravo to pop-we I Heart Celebrity Causes--Stephen King--for his Heifer International efforts!

The MACC Fund was founded in 1976 and is dedicated to funding childhood cancer and related blood disorder research. In that time the MACC Fund has contributed $52 million to the research in efforts to counter childhood cancer being the leading disease-related cause of death in children after the newborn period. Among those supported by the fund are the Medical College of Wisconsin with $450,000 annually; the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center with $350,000 annually; the MACC Fund Pediatric Cancer Research Wing at UW-Madison with $240.000 annually; and $1.5 million paid to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin with another $3.5 million pledged.

Rodgers revealed that early in his collegiate career as a 19-year-old quarter back at Butte College, he had befriended a young man named Daniel who had leukemia. From that experience he vowed one day if given the opportunity and platform he would help all the Daniels out there. The route to establishing that platform included transferring to the University of California-Berkeley in 2003, being drafted in the first round by the Packers in 2005 and sitting as the back up to Brett Favre for three seasons before becoming the starter in 2008.

Rodgers is hand-on by visiting the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and spending time with children battling the disease. He also featured the cause on his own website at itsaaron.com where he hi-lites multiple philanthropic causes. The first season had its three episodes spotlighting three children touched by the MACC Fund. If you would like to contribute, visit the MACC Fund website.

Patterson is the prolific author whose books include the Alex Cross series and Women's Murder Club series. One cause that Patterson has lent his efforts is Operation Gratitude.

Founded in March 2003 by Carolyn Blashek, Operation Gratitude is a way of saying THANKS to the troops by sending care packages containing snacks, entertainment items and personal letters. Blashek initially sent four care packages the first day and it has grown to sending over 150,000 care packages per year with the help of volunteers. The organization encourages letter writing campaigns for both current U.S. military and for the veterans of previous conflicts. The mission of the organization is to lift the spirits and meet some needs of active duty and veterans while providing volunteer opportunities to those who want to offer appreciation to our military.

Patterson and his publisher Little, Brown and Company teamed up with Operation Gratitude in addition to Books for Heroes, the Peerless Bookstore and Feed the Children in 2012 to distribute many of the author's titles to military personnel stationed in the U.S. and Afghanistan. The books were sent in 20,000 boxes from his printers in Indiana to Fort Benning, Georgia and the Van Nuys National Guard Armory in California and then shipped to the troops.

I Heart Celebrity Causes Highlights Derek Jeter's Turn 2

Each month in this new population-we™ (pop-we) series, I Heart Celebrity Causes, a celebrity will be chosen and the cause that they promote will be looked at.
I Heart Celebrity Causes!

This month in the third installment of I Heart Celebrity Causes the focus is on starting shortstop and team captain of the New York Yankees Derek Jeter and his Turn 2 Foundation. Jeter established the Foundation during his rookie season in 1996 to promote healthy lifestyles among youth. Another tenant of the organization is to provide guidance to help youth avoid drugs and alcohol.

The name Turn 2 is borrowed from the baseball term when middle infielders start off a double play by getting the first out at second base. Jeter decided to start the foundation on a road trip to Detroit while eating pizza in his hotel room. Nearly 20 years later the foundation has deep roots in Western Michigan, Tampa, FL and New York City, which are all areas Jeter has close ties. Since its beginning the Turn 2 Foundation has helped thousands of youths by awarding more than $19 million in grants.

Jeter was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1996 and after a career that has seen him be a 12-time All-Star he announced he will retire from playing after the 2014 season. That will cap a long baseball journey that starting with playing T-ball at age 5 in Kalamazoo, MI. The Yankees later drafted Jeter with the sixth pick of the first round in 1992 out of Central High School in Kalamazoo.

The stated mission of Turn 2: "is to create and support signature programs and activities that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and 'Turn 2' healthy lifestyles". Those programs include the Jackie Robinson Recreation Center in Harlem in New York City, the St. John's Recreation Center in Brooklyn, NY, the St James Recreation Center in Bronx, NY and the Sorrentino Recreation Center in Queens, NY. Other signature programs include the Jeter Meter in New York City, Jeter's Leaders in both
New York City and West Michigan and the Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House in Tampa.

Jeter also uses his position in the public eye to raise awareness in children that good choices must be practiced daily. Each year he hosts the Turn 2 Foundation Dinner and the 18th Annual Dinner on June 1, 2014 raised over $1 million. The Jeter's Leaders of New York and Kalamazoo travel to Washington D.C for a biannual service project and Jeter stresses the importance of their making an annual visit to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) for educational purposes.

If you would like to make a donation to the Turn 2 Foundation you can visit their Donate to Turn 2 Foundation page.

I Heart Celebrity Causes Highlights Katy Perry's Generosity Water

I Heart Celebrity Causes.
As a society we like our celebrities and tend to support the causes they endorse with this status. Our celebrities are those that entertain and inspire us such as those that act in the movies, on television and the stage, our favorite musicians, athletes from our favorite teams or provide national pride representing at the Olympics, the authors of our favorite literary works and those that provide contributions in the world of art. Each month in this new population-we™ (pop-we) series, I Heart Celebrity Causes, a celebrity will be chosen and the cause that they promote will be looked at.

This month in the second installment of I Heart Celebrity Causes the focus is on musical artist Katy Perry and Generosity Water. Perry is very philanthropically minded as her efforts have helped more than 50 nonprofit organizations. One she paid special attention to was Generosity Water for which she earmarked part of the ticket sales from her California Dreams tour along with The Humane Society of America and Children’s Health Fund.

From ticket sales raised from 122 California Dreams tour dates over $40,000 was raised for Generosity Water.  As a result the organization was able to build wells in Ghana, India, Laos and Nigeria that provided clean and safe drinking water for over 4000 people. Another result was Perry being named Billboard’s Woman of the Year in 2012.

One sobering fact is over 768 million people worldwide do not have access to clean water. Generosity Water points out that having access to clean water is the first step to breaking the cycle of poverty.  They currently have active projects in Ghana, Haiti, India and Uganda. Since their inception in 2008 they have completed projects worldwide in several countries including Cambodia, China, Ethiopia, Honduras, Liberia and Philippines. The greatest impact so far was in Liberia where 50 projects were completed to help over 62,000 people. To date they have been able to bring clean water to over 340,000 people in 19 countries. If you would like to donate to this cause you can visit Generosity Water's donation page.

I Heart Celebrity Causes Highlights Eliza Dushku's THRIVEGulu

As a society we like our celebrities and tend to support the causes they endorse with this status. Our celebrities are those that entertain and inspire us such as those that act in the movies, on television and the stage, our favorite musicians, athletes from our favorite teams or provide national pride representing at the Olympics, the authors of our favorite literary works and those that provide contributions in the world of art. Each month in this new population-we™ (pop-we) series, I Heart Celebrity Causes, a celebrity will be chosen and the cause that they promote will be looked at.

I Heart Celebrity Causes...
The first is the actress Eliza Dushku and THRIVEGulu. Dushku has continued the philanthropic tradition of her mother Dr. Judy Dushku. Together they helped launch the fund raising for THARCE Gulu in 2010. THARCE stands for Trauma Healing and Reflection Center. Both are also on the board of directors for THRIVEGulu.

Dushku and her mother had taken a trip to Uganda and it was eye opening and life changing for both. They had seen the effects of the Ugandan civil war on its victims especially the former child soldiers. The center was devoted to those former child soldiers in Gulu, Uganda whose stories of what they had endured inspired them. The center was a means to help rehabilitate and reintegrate these children back into the community.

Out of that initial effort grew THRIVEGulu whose mission is to assist the communities of Northern Uganda heal from the traumatic events of war, sexual enslavement, extreme poverty and lost opportunities. The organization works hand and hand with the local staff to manage and grow its initiatives. Eliza Dushku has done much to raise awareness and has led many fund raising campaigns. Eliza Dushku's Facebook page is one platform from which she has spread the message about THRIVEGulu. YouTube is another. Watch Eliza Dushku's YouTube about HARCE and THRIVEGulu.

"We want to encourage the breaking down of this barrier that we're over here and they're over there and there's this separateness--because we're all brothers and sisters--and we connect and share and grow together," said  Eliza Dushku. "Just opening up that space in your brain to wonder what's happening there and how you can be apart is exactly how you can be apart."

Want to get involved? Connect with THRIVEGulu on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Most importantly, Bravo to pop-we I Heart Celebrity Causes very first recipient--Eliza Dushku and her mother--for their work with THRIVEGulu!
