As a nation, we have had many collective tragedies that touch people who were not directly effected. I do think people do what they can to show support and that they remember long after the "satellite city" packs up and leaves.

After Katrina, I saw a woman who made it possible for youth of that area to receive prom dresses. There are so many ways that a person can serve and some are not so obvious.

After a friend lost her father and had concern about her brothers and the estate, someone who could not deal emotionally with another funeral stayed in the home to protect from theft.

There are ways that religion allows people to show respect for the dead in a way that gives great solace. Jewish people plant trees in Israel to remember a loved one.

I had a friend who thought that after the tragic loss of her son that friends may not be there as time went by. On the anniversary of his death, there were Masses at Catholic Churches sponsored by those who care for the family.

When I took Death and Dying at school, I learned that mourning can take many years and that it is good to ask a person how they are doing long after the passing of a loved one. I think that she said that mourning takes seven years. However, I know that there are some losses that you never really get over in this life although I have never experienced such feelings. However, I know those people have found joy again while they still mourn the loss as the years pass.bkbsmileshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18244943409892583102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7051605729767113338.post-16720753824820175542011-01-28T08:05:12.640-06:002011-01-28T08:05:12.640-06:00Barb: This week also marks the 25th anniversary of...Barb: This week also marks the 25th anniversary of the Challenger tragedy, where seven crew members including one civilian (school teacher Christa McAuliffe) lives were lost. I think your article definitely will resonate with some population-we readers as they remember that day.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17311338026631207676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7051605729767113338.post-39212605547665920282011-01-24T19:11:32.449-06:002011-01-24T19:11:32.449-06:00Becky, yes, technology can help us find out the la...Becky, yes, technology can help us find out the latest information in a tragic situation and also show support. I am touched by so many in our nation who are so generous and compassionate.bkbsmileshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18244943409892583102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7051605729767113338.post-15814197842161684802011-01-24T04:58:38.368-06:002011-01-24T04:58:38.368-06:00Barb: That was a very poignant post. I think it is appropriate to note after the shootings that it was apparent that a lot of people were reaching out via social media networks to offer their condolences. We have a buddy whose daughter attends Millard South. My husband immediately called him to see if his daughter was okay; however, there was no answer. So, I jumped online and began to offer my support and condolences to him and her stepmother for what their daughter must have went through. In particular, I think Facebook helped a lot of the community show compassion to all the teachers, students and families affected by the Millard South tragedy.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17311338026631207676noreply@blogger.com
